What Are Owners Saying?
It’s one thing to read what the manufacturer or retailer is saying about their product, but it is another to read what an actual owner is saying. We find manufacturing/retailer information to be very useful from the perspective of specifications, details, warranty, operating procedures, etc. However their sales pitch sometimes needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The owner, on the other hand, tends to be a little more up-front about such things. As a result, owner comments and ratings are key to increasing the odds of making the right buy.
A thorough review of New Home 49360 owner comments has revealed the following common likes and dislikes:
PROS
- Lightweight
- Great for classes and sewing gatherings
- Quiet operation
- Easy to setup and use
- Good automatic thread cutter
- Feels well built
- Great machine for quilting
- Has plenty of features for its size
CONS
- Sewing light is a little dim
- A bit expensive
Most reviews and ratings for this sewing machine are good. Probably the two most common positive things owners highlight are how useful the electronic thread cutter is and how pleased they are with the host of additional presser feet that come with the machine (comes with 8 feet in total).
In addition, many people report really liking their Janome sewing machine and, more generally, the “Janome” brand. Janome machines seem to deliver, and this is commented upon by folks who indicate they have had several other brands.
People feel the 49360 is lightweight yet still feature rich. It also has a carry handle and is a great machine for taking to classes or gatherings. Some people also report that the machine feels solid and well-built.
Other items people like are the needle threader and the clear, bright LCD control panel. The machine is known to be very quilter friendly and it runs smoothly. The foot pedal is also quite responsive.
The 49360 is reportedly easy to setup and the directions provided in the manual, which can be downloaded below, are very clear and detailed. This is important as we have seen quite a few manuals that are poor (missing information, poor graphics, and even incorrect instructions). This leads to frustrated owners.
On the downside there are a few comments about the sewing light being dim. This is not uncommon and we’ve seen this issue on quite a few machines – although there are some that provide good illumination. There are inexpensive sewing light add-ons one can buy – such as the item on the right which has received top-nptch reviews. Additionally, some owners feel that the New Home 49360 is a better fit for the beginning sewist than the experienced seamstress.
Finally, this is not a particularly inexpensive machine and the MSRP on the Janome.com site is a whopping $999USD. Although we have seen it for as low as $450USD on Amazon.

Weight, Accessories, Warranty
One of the top selling features of the 49360 is its light weight. It weighs in at only 12.6 lbs and this is achieved in part via its aluminum interior frame. 12.6 lbs is indeed quite light and this unit may well make our list of Best Portable Sewing Machines when we do a 2018 update. The machine is also not too large and it has dimensions: Width = 15 inches, Height = 8.4 inches, Depth = 6.9 inches.
A hard cover is provided and there is also a built-in drawer to hold the accessories. 8 presser feet are included: a general purpose foot (installed on machine), a zipper foot, an open toe foot, a satin stitch foot, an automatic buttonhole foot, an overedge foot, a blind hem foot, and a ¼” seam foot. Additional accessories include both a large and small spool holder, an additional spool pin, class 15 bobbins, a lint brush, a screwdriver, a needle set, and a seam ripper.
It carries a manufacturer's 25 year limited warranty which actually means:
- 25 Years on Mechanical Parts
- 2 Years on Electrical Parts
- 1 Year Labor
Bear in mind that this warranty applies only to normal household use of the sewing machine and not commercial use.
Sewing Machine Manual
Janome instruction manuals tend to be lengthy, well written and detailed. The manual for the 49360 is no exception and it is 45 pages in length with all sorts of graphics and information. It provides an overview of the machine, information on all the features, and how to setup and get ready to sew. There is also a section on basic sewing and another on decorative stitching. In addition, it covers maintenance and troubleshooting. You can see a copy of the manual here: Janome New Home 49360 Manual.
